Nunney castle – live music at the castle is a big part of what makes Nunney Fayre Day special. There are a few things to note. English Heritage are responsible for the castle and, for safety reasons, set limits on number of people within the castle grounds during events. They monitor each event. On Fayre Day, the castle and the area away from the live music is closed to the public.
We have to limit the numbers of people within the walled area around the castle. This is because we want to keep you safe. It’s a confined space and is surrounded by the moat. The water in the moat is deep and the sides are steep, we don’t want anyone going in.
There is one way in and out via 3 steep, uneven stone steps with no handrail. Regrettably, the castle is not accessible by wheelchair or for anyone who has difficulty with steps.
We use a simple one out = one in system. Remember, if you nip out to the loo or to get a drink, you will only be able to get back in if there is capacity. If we’ve reached the maximum number, you’ll need to wait until someone leaves.
The castle is stewarded by volunteers from the village. They are all about having a good time, but are responsible for making sure the event is safe. Please follow their instructions.
There is no seating so bring a chair if you don’t want to sit on the grass.
The house and gardens next to the castle are private.
Entry
Free (yes, really)
If the main area in the centre of the village is getting too packed, we may ask you to chill out in the car park field for a while to give us time to get people moving through. Parking is £5 and it’s a good idea to bring cash.
Times
Nunney Fayre Day opens at 10am and closes at 5pm.
After 5pm, you are most welcome to stay and chill out, enjoy a pint at The George, play in the park, take a walk by the brook – whatever takes your fancy, but do bear in mind stall holders and volunteers will be packing down so there will be vehicles moving about and the roads will be open to general traffic. There are no pavements in the centre of the village. The castle remains closed for up to 2 hours after Fayre Day ends.
Dogs
All well behaved dogs are welcome. Nunney Fayre Day can be crowded and noisy. You will need to bring water and a dog bowl. There is a nice walk via Donkey Lane or the path behind Quarry Gardens across the fields to the brook for some shade and the chance to cool off.
Stock up on poo bags. The Spar sells them if you run out.
Dogs must not be left in vehicles under any circumstances.
Loos
There are PortaLoos at the car parks, in the centre of the village, including an accessible loo. You will also find toilets at The George, Café and village hall.
First Aid
Many of the volunteers are emergency First Aid trained. St John’s Ambulance are on hand all day.
Remember to bring water, sunscreen and a hat. It’s also a good idea to bring any regular medication with you just in case.
Rubbish
There are bins and recycling points throughout the Fayre, but please take your rubbish home with you. The average age of our volunteer Bin Boys is 75, so let’s help them out.
Chill out and picnic
Around the village hall and in Quarry Gardens or take a short walk down to the meadows by the brook. Space at the castle is very limited.
Volunteers
Nunney Fayre Day is one of the village activities organised by Nunney Community Association (NCA). We could not do any of it without the support and help of the village. All organising and general stewarding on the day, including the car parks, setting up and clearing down is done by volunteers. They give up their time to help with anything and everything and come along to briefings beforehand. The NCA thanks each and every one of you and the cheesy chips are on us!
Road closure stewards are special (in so many ways) and join us for the day from Frome Town Carnival Committee.
